About Ashtanga Yoga

Asthanga was founded by Pattabhi Jois who just celebrated his 90th birthday during this past July’s full moon and still going strong--that is Guruji with Debby in May '05 in New York City.

Ashtanga means 8-limbs and is the most vigorous form of Vinyasa flow yoga. Ashtanga definitely appeals to men because once they do Ashtanga and see its power, they never think of yoga in the same way again! And it is ok if you are  not flexible. You will gain flexibility--guaranteed! The first series of poses (asanas) are strength building and cleansing so that once you move into the Second series you are completing poses without effort and can work on calming the nervous system.

This workshop has sold out in the past so sign up now to guarantee a spot. Class size is limited to 8.  Open to all levels however it is suggested that you have no physical limitations and some prior yoga experience.  If you have the desire and commitment, you are of course welcome as well as several variations of poses will be offered to fit with your current practice and experience.

This practice heats you up from the inside versus the outside like other forms of 'hot' yoga!  Known as Yoga Chikista or yoga therapy, Ashtanga when practiced can really help to heal.

Over the course of the series, all poses in the first series will be covered, culminating in a fully led class in the last session. In addition to learning all the poses, each participant will gain an understanding of the philosophy behind Ashtanga yoga. Each week, various poses will be broken down and tips will be shared for going deeper into a posture safely. You will come away from this workshop feeling stronger and more grounded and centered!

About Debby

Debby is an avid asthanga practitioner who began practicing in 1997 is currently working on the second series with Eddie Stern in NYC. She is  also passionate about vinyasa flow because it can be tailored to the energy and desires of her classes. All of her classes are fun and full of high energy so you leave feeling ready to seize the day, yet in a calm state of mind! She has studied or attended workshops with Richard Freeman, Shiva Rea, Sri Pattabhi Jois, Sharath Ragaswamy, Mark Whitwell, Rodney Yee, David Swenson, Raji Thron, Sharon Gannon, Ana Forrest, Leslie Kaminoff and others. She would like to thank Raji Thron for believing in her and Lisa Schrempp and Shiva Rea for their inspiration. She holds an advanced vinyasa flow certification from Shiva Rea , an additional six month teacher certification with Shiva and is a registered instructor with Yoga Alliance. In her free time she likes to hang out with her family including Shantih, her fabulous Tibetan Terrier, play tennis, laugh (or as her twin daughters say "act corny") or just read a great book!
