About Ashtanga Yoga

Asthanga was founded by Pattabhi Jois who just celebrated his 90th birthday during this past July’s full moon and still going strong--that is Guruji with Debby in May '05 in New York City.

Ashtanga means 8-limbs and is the most vigorous form of Vinyasa flow yoga. Ashtanga definitely appeals to men because once they do Ashtanga and see its power, they never think of yoga in the same way again! And it is ok if you are  not flexible. You will gain flexibility--guaranteed! The first series of poses (asanas) are strength building and cleansing so that once you move into the Second series you are completing poses without effort and can work on calming the nervous system.

A real life experience...

Debby Kaminsky, LivYoga’s ashtanga instructor has first hand experience about being humbled, learning about the true mind-body connection and injury prevention through her mysore practice.   Debby practiced the entire first series of Ashtanga at one yoga studio in NY and found herself injured from time to time—pulled hamstring, aching hip, lower back pain.  And then she made the decision to go to a place that initially intimidated her but she knew it offered mysore and it made sense.  After her first day at this particular yoga shala, the teacher stopped her at the midway point in her practice.  She thought, “wow” as out of the corner of her eye she watched yoga practioner after yoga practioner flowing effortlessly through their practice while their breath danced with their poses.  She continued at this yoga shala (studio, shala in Sanskrit means house) and found that as the teacher gave her new poses she had once muscled through that now she was handling them with ease.  To this day, Debby continues her mysore practice on her own and with this same teacher.

What is Mysore?

It is a wonderful place in India where the founder of Ashtanga yoga, Sri Pattabhi Jois runs his yoga shala, Astanga Yoga Research Institute. (website is www.ayri.org).  But Mysore is also a wonderful way of learning Ashtanga Yoga, one of the most invigorating and powerful yoga practices around.  It is wonderful because mysore is for all levels and each student goes at their own pace and progresses at their own pace.

About Ashtanga Yoga, then back to Mysore at LivYoga

The first or primary series of Ashtanga Yoga known as Yoga Chikitsa is therapeutic as it helps to detoxify and align the body, making it lighter and stronger and ready for future series.  This is why if you have ever taken an ashtanga class and while moving into each asana or pose are  practicing ujjayi breathing (deep inhale and exhale through back of your throat—yup, sounds a bit like Darth Vader!) and engaging your bandhas, you will create an intense internal heat that helps to purify muscles and organs and get rid of unwanted toxins.  In essence, it isn’t surprising to finish your practice in a deep, satisfying sweat.

More about a Mysore Class

When a student is in a mysore class, the practice is a self-practice and the teacher gives corrections and adjustments as appropriate and also determines when the student is given the next pose in the sequence to start practicing.  In theory, mysore practice is a truly safe way to practice ashtanga because new poses in the almost 70 pose sequence (including finishing) are not given until the practioner is ready to receive them.  This is an ideal class and style for anyone interested in checking out ashtanga yoga or for more experienced practioners to continue progressing on their ashtanga yoga journey.

Feel free to try ashtanga at Debby’s led class on Sunday mornings.  She believes in a safe environment which is why this led class also gradually builds new poses into the flow.

Moon Days

There are no Mysore classes on full moon and new moon, following the tradition of the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India.
